Another story with a happy ending!

Species: African gray parrot

Gender male

Age: 5 years

Name: ZARKO

Excellent “speaker”, prone to various escapades, parrot was brought with purulent discharge from the left nostril, he was breathing heavily, and his movement was reduced to a minimum. Microbiological smears, and lung X-rays revealed a severe pneumonia with complications in the form of rhinitis and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eye. Based on antibiogram, we were in a position to apply the best treatment against the discovered causes, first with an injection then we started with the “per os” therapy.
The parrot is healthy today, “calls” owners, “rings” instead of the phone, and we in NOMOVET hope that he sometimes remembers us…

Chinchilla who survived an electric shock!

Species: Chinchilla

Gender: Male

Age: 4 months

Name: Chucky

It was 23/06/2009 when chinchilla Chucky was brought to our clinic. Two days earlier it suffered electric shock biting electric cables. The owners have found it behind the fridge with the following symptoms: abnormally twitching body, tossing aside, and a large wound to the lips on the left.

Chinchilla arrived in critical condition, disoriented and dehydrated, with an infected wound of the left side of upper and lower lips. It could not stand, and its right front leg was completely numb and it could not bend.

After infusion, antibiotics therapy, tranquilizers and local treatment of wounds, Chucky was better the very next day.

This case is a pure example of what rodent owners often forget: Under no circumstances rodents should not be let out of the cages without strict control of the owner! Rodents as species have a natural propensity for biting various objects and very often electric cables become their target.

You could say this time „Chucky is lucky“ but unfortunately fatal outcomes are more common.

The importance of proper nutrition for the health of your pets is REMARKABLE!

Species: Dog

Breed: Miniature Schnauzer

Gender: Male

Age: 8 months

Name: Nick

Owners have brought Nick to our clinic with symptoms of intense vomiting and diarrhea. Considering that this is a young animal we immediately started rehydration by intravenous infusion, and at the same time we were working on diagnostics (X-ray of the abdomen: native and contrasting). As the x-rays showed the digestive system is without the presence of a foreign body, the owners “confessed” that they were “but only a little,” giving it pumpkin seeds as a food supplement! Since this is a food that consists of large amounts of oil, diarrhea and vomiting are logical consequence. After therapy is taken Nick was completely healthy.

Red-eared sliders are very common as pets in our homes and in homes across the Europe. Although their care and maintenance are quite simple, problem frequently occurs especially with young individuals. It is the inflammation of ocular structures, starting from the third eyelid, and as the process is expanding it abstracts other parts of the eye. Owners often come with an anamnesis that the turtle is “blind”. It is, in fact, the intense inflammation and thickening of the third eyelid, as well as the accumulation of purulent content below it. If treatment is not started in time, the process abstracts other structures of the eye and then treatment is painstakingly with a poor prognosis. The main cause is inadequate nutrition, poor with vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin A, as well as inadequate water temperature.
In order to prevent the occurrence of this disease, it is necessary to make more diverse diet, so beside gammarus shrimp, there should be involved raw beef, chicken or fish. Occasionally it is necessary to add one of the commercial vitamin-mineral supplements, and of course take care of the water temperature. It should be between 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Hygiene of the aquarium and water in it, of course, is implied.

If disease still occurs, there should be no delay with bringing the turtle to the vet. The prognosis is much better if the turtle is brought while still taking food because at a later stage of the disease appetite disappears, and the process can be extended to other organs, so the outcome is often bad.

On the photographs you can see how does the eye look at the start of treatment, after 10 days since therapy started and at the end – healthy eye after successfully conducted therapy.

Always contact your vet. Do not treat your pet by yourself!

Species: Dog

Breed: German Boxer

Gender: Female

Age: 9 years

Name: Milica

The dog was brought to our clinic with profuse, long-lasting diarrhea which at first, owners themselves, tried to cure but as there was no improvement, they looked for help. Complete clinical examination was made, general and special (blood, stool, abdominal X-ray, ultrasound of the abdomen, together with endoscopy of the upper and lower parts of the digestive tract). Hyperemic changes were determined in the initial part of the stomach, as well as increased activity of the enzyme which is characteristic for liver function disorders. With adequate medical treatment and a special diet, diarrhea was completely stopped, and liver function returned to physiological limits. Milica continues to entertain its owners with her mischiefs and we in NOMOVET will do everything it stays like that for a long time.

Persistence always pays off!

Species: Dog

Breed: Shih-Tzu

Gender: Female

Age: 3 years

Name: Nadia

Nadia was brought to our clinic about a year ago with severe crusted and hemorrhagic lesions of the skin all over the body. Dog was obtained from another owner with the statement that it was incurable disease and not even worth trying to treat. With microbiological diagnosis, parasite Demodex canis is recognized. Opponent is known, we started a fight! After several months of intensive treatment and special diet for skin problems, skin is completely healthy and hair is covering the whole body, so today, Nadia is a proper representative of her breed which actually is known by a thick blanket of hair.

Bird is happy again!

Vrsta: sivi afrički papagaj

Pol: muški

Starost: 36 godina

Ime: Žak

Species: African gray parrot

Gender: male

Age: 36 years

Name: Jacques

29/05/2009 was the day when our clinic has received a gray African parrot Jacques. From anamnesis we found out that the bird is at least 36 years old, and that is brought from Africa as a baby. He changed many owners and lived in not so great living conditions. He is 5 years with the current owners where he is provided with balanced and varied diet and a large living space with all necessary props. According to the owner, the problem occurred 2-3 days before their arrival at the clinic. The bird began to move with difficulty and eventually could no longer stand on the bar, but it laid at the bottom of the cage.

Clinically, the bird had a very poor neurological results. Relied on the tarsal joints, his claws were clenched and it could not move. He was apathetic, eating less and visibly weakened, losing a considerable part of the pectoral muscle so that the ridge of the breastbone was very stressed on palpation. After clinical examination we did X-ray in two different projections and also blood samples have been taken for hematological and biochemical analysis. X-ray showed us changes in the skeletal system such as decreasing bone density of the substance, as well as enlarged both kidneys.

Due to the general exhaustion, the bird was rehydrated with infusion solution, and then received all necessary symptomatic and supportive therapy. The next day the bird was much better. The result of the laboratory analysis confirmed renal failure which is not uncommon for older birds of this particular species and their aging process.

From day to day the bird was in better mood, began to eat normally, and returned to its usual activities. We were all very happy when already on 01/06 we saw the bird happily perform his favorite imitation while standing on the shoulder of the owner. From 06/06 Jacques was prescribed oral therapy which should be carried out by the owners with whom we are in constant phone contact.

With no unrealistic expectations about the complete cure, we managed to improve the quality of Jacques`life and make his old age easier, and to provide owners to continue enjoying spending time with their pet.
